Man, you loves the snark.
He doesn't go into the whys, but I suspect it's merely because students aren't demanding intellectual diversity. A lot of them see it as a way to get that piece of paper that opens the door at many employers. And many of those employers don't even care what you learn at the university. Not to mention that most students are young and inexperienced and are thus not likely to be utilizing all the information available to them. Re: Here's a thought

I was actually thinking that the logical Zywickian response would be that tenure inhibits the market for professors from functioning adequately. Or something.

Well, that's probably the biggest factor. Regardless, not all markets are equally efficient.
Zywickian is pretty catchy. Much moreso than flingian or praktikian, anyway. Re: Here's a thought
