View Article  fresh produce -- the del.icio.us clipping blogs
We have another experiment underway at chez Nadezhda for your reading and commenting pleasure. We hope that the clippings blogs will become a sort of cross between a "current links list" and a forum.

The clipping blogs are a running commentary on items that have caught our eye.

You can add your comments or share other links by contributing in the comments sections.

The first clipping blog we've set up -- "carte du jour" -- has clippings on hot topics of current debate, plus a potpourri of links to everything from a great article, to a review of a new book, to a must-see website to the out-and-out weird.

Additional blogs are being created from some of our other del.icio.us links feeds -- each will explore a different broad topic or issue areas that we and our readers/commenters tend to find especially interesting.

View Article  Intro 1 -- Chez Nadezhda -- What & Why?

The end of the Cold War, September 11, and the continuing war in Iraq have produced a large and noisy global idea industry devoted to rethinking America's role in the world and, here in the US, how we organize major sectors of American society. The failure of communist ideology to produce social, political and economic benefits dreamed of by its proponents is not the same as a "global liberal capitalism triumphant." No single world view or ideology has yet to emerge as a serious opponent to global liberal capitalism. On any given topic, however, there are a host of challengers and pretenders trying to elbow their way into the marketplace of ideas and influence.

Out of this constant stream of new products from the global idea industry, Chez Nadezhda will collect items we find especially informative, provocative or substantive. Our goal is not only to keep a current inventory of the newest theory or the state of play within these grand debates. We're also trying to help our own thinking about these issues, to find (or impose) some coherence within the cacophony, to filter or reduce the noise level so we can hear whether some conversations are taking place.   more »

redrawing our mental maps

A common theme at chez Nadezhda is how we need new "mental maps" of our changing world. We're not likely to find good answers if we're asking the wrong questions.

Challenges to the old narratives and metaphors are springing up in a host of different arenas, from the future of the global political system, to reframing the Social Security and health care debates, to new social and information spaces emerging in the blogosphere.

Here's an assortment worth exploring from "mental cartographers."

Iraq, Grand Strategy & the Lessons of Military History, Anthony Cordesman, Kennedy School 2004 S.T. Lee Lecture on Military History. The need for a new military metanarrative (hat tip War Historian, Mark Grimsley.) "The problem is rarely that we actually forget history. It is rather that we repeat mistakes in choosing the particular version of the past that we decide to remember. In the case of military history, we select only part of what actually happened and often fail to examine - or learn from - the part that matters most." American mistakes in Vietnam, Iraq & other recent conflicts are problems of grand strategy. They reflect our popular culture of "military history" -- a metanarrative of fighting and battles and, to the extent civil-military matters enter into it, how the affect achieving victory, defined as defeat of the enemy.

The private and public outpouring of assistance to victims of the tsunami has been heartening and impressive. The challenge ahead, once life-and-death needs of the survivors are met, will be to keep the massive recovery efforts on the front burner in the months to come.

At chez Nadezhda we have also been supporting the Friends of Iraq's Arabic blogging tool, sponsored by Spirit of America. Making blogs and hosting services available to Iraqis allows us to share the joy of conversation with those who need to feel their voices are being heard.
