What do I know, but I agree that it is entirely optimistic that the current Republican party, as structured, won't find a way to paper over there divisions. Look at the early 70's - the Democratic party was SERIOUSLY divided, but it wasn't until the early 80's before any democratic majorities were touched (and then only temporarily, until 92.) The scale of these things takes awhile, and there are a lot more self-identified "Republicans" now - so I'm not optimistic.
