It's important to consider China's history when condemning Chinese suppression of non-state sanctioned religions. The bloodiest civil war in the history of the world to date was on Chinese soil, perpetrated by a strange cultish religion. The effect of the Taiping Rebellion led to the collapse of the Qing. The Han Dynasty fell in 184 CE amongst large-scale pseudo-religious uprisings. Further dynasties viewed similar cults as the revoking of the Mandate of Heaven.
The current CCP Dynasty is no different in its reaction to the Falun Gong. While history cannot possibly justify the government's tactics, it may cast it in a more understandable light.
