Re: Re: Uyghur Separatism and the Politics of Islam in China's Western Frontier

Hey, nice work. I've got some friends doublechecking whether there are any modern Uighur dictionaries or encyclopedias here in Urumqi. I had never thought about it, I don't know enough Uighur to look for one. A few little details: not only are people under 18 not allowed to attend mosque, but schools and universities require students to sign a contract saying they will not participate in any religious practices at all (many hide texts in their dorm). Also, an interesting thing about religion here - the place is overrun with foreign missionaries who seem to be relatively successful. While this means some are swayed away from Islam, this might also be perceived as a threat to Uighurs and push a few towards extremist Islamic views. Finally, I know tons of Uighurs who love Bush and always did. They commonly tell me (even after I mention my personal dislike for his policies) that they like a good monotheist, Saddam was bad, and, most recently, Bush stuck it to the Chinese by refusing to send the Gitmo prisoners to China.
